BMW has already changed into something new. The Bayerische Flugzeug-Werke AG was founded in 1916 and started making engines for airplanes right away. A year later, the name was changed to Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH. Soon, it was making engines for motorcycles, then motorbikes, beautiful cars like the first 328, and finally motors for airplanes.

After the Second World War, it was only allowed to make home goods. Following were the 700, 507, and 501, which were all very cool cars. The 501 was, well, too ugly, the 700 looked too much like a limited-edition race car, and the 507 was just too pricey.

Just as the company was about to go bankrupt, the Quandt brothers stepped in with some money. Soon after, BMW showed off the first Neue Klasse, the 1500, which would later become the 2002 and is still admired by club racers and fans all over the world.

Things got better after that. Talk to any M3 driver you know.

When BMW talked about a Neue Klasse four years ago, it saw a chance to start over, and it sees one again now. A new breed of electric vehicles is part of this reinvention.

News stories say that BMW and many other European automakers were and still are sure that all cars will be electric in the future. Even if that view is supported by the fact that sales of electric vehicles (EVs) seem to have reached a plateau, BMW has continued its move toward EVs with the Neue Klasse X.

To reach this goal, the I Vision Dee was shown for the first time in January 2023, followed by the Vision Neue Klasse in September. Now comes the Neue Klasse X, a brand-new BMW Vision Vehicle that will actually go into production the following year. The Vision Neue Klasse will join it. It is a 3-Series-sized car that looks like the i Vision Dee. The 3-Series and X3 have left gaps in the market that will be filled by the Vision Neue Klasse car and the Neue Klasse X.

Of course, the Vision Neue Klasse and Neue Klasse X are fully electric. When BMW talked about electricity four years ago, it said that by 2030, all of its sales would be electric cars. Along with the Vision Neue Klasse saloon from last year, this is the first car in a new class of all-electric BMWs.

Take a look at the Neue Klasse X, which was just released in Munich.

SUVs are where the money is. BMW calls them SAVs, which stands for “sport activity vehicles.” The fact that they are built with two boxes shows how popular these cars are around the world.

In terms of these shapes, it looks good and has some smart features that set it apart from the other generic, boxy shapes you see on every road in every country in the world. It must have the biggest glass windshield in the world. It also has a long wheelbase-to-overhang ratio and huge windows all around. At the moment, it’s planned to be a moving aquarium. Please bring some greens!

Like the M2’s schnozz, the front end needs to be fixed, and the kidney grille may be too thin because it’s smaller. A light mark around the grille lets it know when you’re coming up behind it, kind of like how a small electric dachshund does.

The headlights are very close to the tailgate, and the rear wing’s little whoop-dee-doo is very stylish. BMW says that the new look and special brake system for electric cars cut down on drag by 20% compared to the standard X model. These improvements also help the car be up to 25% more fuel-efficient overall.

In production versions of the Neue Klasse, there will also be an “enhanced BMW 3D Head-Up Display.” Data can be sent from the main screen to the panoramic vision screen to make your user interface. You can even put your pictures on the screen. Even though it’s hard to say how much of the windshield this part will take up or whether it will get in the way of the driver’s view of the road, BMW has thought about it.

And Olivier Pitrat, who is in charge of the UI/UX design team, said, “Keeping the driver-focused is our top priority.”

A knob on the steering wheel gives you more power (“We will have knobs where necessary,” Pitrat said). It’s also possible to use voice requests. They will also run into AI that is smarter than them. Saying something like, “My feet are cold,” will tell the AI where to put the heater vents, so you don’t have to worry about changing the controls while you’re driving.

Neue Klasse cars and SAVs will be able to have SAE Levels 2 and 3 autonomy, as well as BMW Active Cruise Control with traffic light recognition. If certain conditions are met, Level 4 autonomy may also be possible in some valet parking situations.

BMW says the control unit (ECU) that handles everything is now ten times faster than it was.

BMW didn’t say how much power its electric drivetrain has, but the Neue Klasse X is powered by the company’s sixth version of eDrive technology. Updated e-drive units, or electric motors, and new cylinder lithium-ion battery cells with more than 20% more energy density than BMW’s old prismatic cell technology are part of this. Everything is powered by the 800-volt system, which also speeds up charging by up to 30%.

The new drive has up to 30% more range than the old one, so it has more drive for the German market as a whole. It’s all on its way already. A member of BMW’s management board named Jochen Galler said, “We’re going to make something very similar to what you see here in 2025.”
