Most people think of “off-grid” as taking their camper to the nearby OHV campsite to get away from their job and commute while still being able to connect with other people. Do you really want to leave everything behind and bring a little bit of society with you? The 2024 Krug Expedition Project Rhino XL is the car you need. That’s okay; you can work from your car. There are three layouts you can choose from that are built on a big Mercedes-Benz chassis cab.
This thing is getting ready for the end of the world. The 2024 Mercedes-Benz Atego 1324 A L-cab frame is used to build the Krug Expedition Project Rhino XL, which can go off the grid and be fully functional right away. The Krug Expedition is a great place to start because the Atego comes in two chassis lengths, two cab options, and with all-wheel drive as an option. Krug picked a model with a 7.7-liter turbodiesel I-6 engine that makes 238 horsepower and 737.6 lb-ft of torque.
The big diesel engine gets its power from a 260-liter (68.7-gallon) tank. Three locking differentials—one for each axle and one for the AWD transfer case—and switchable ABS will keep you safe. It has 20-inch wheels with 365/80R20 tires that give it great grip, and a semi-automated tire filling system can be added.
Adding the Project Rhino XL camper box to the body makes the XL 175, XL 200, and XL Business models. Indeed, Project Rhino XL is ready for you if your job calls for you to leave the road and go somewhere unknown. It is advertised as an adventure-ready vehicle that lets families move almost anywhere in comfort; it’s basically a small house on wheels.
One fixed double bed and two bunk beds that are 175 cm (5.74 feet) long make up the XL 175. It also has a bathroom that is part of the kitchen, a 660-ah home battery, a Vitrifrigo Slim 150 fridge/freezer combo, and a Miele stove with two cooking zones. Grey water is kept in a 285-liter (75.2-gallon) tank, and there is also a 545-liter (143.9-gallon) tank for water.
Even though they are very similar, the XL 200 has two 200 cm (6.56 feet) long bunk beds and a bathroom and shower. In the XL Business, there is no bunk bed. Instead, there is a table, a bathroom, and a shower that are joined. The bathroom area is much bigger, though, when the bunk beds are taken away. The smaller freshwater tank (350 liters or 92.5 gallons) on the XL Business shows that it can only hold two people. The XL 175 and XL 200, on the other hand, can hold up to four people. The gray water tank’s size stays the same.
There are three home boxes. Each one is 5,650 mm long, which is 18.5 feet, and 2,480 mm wide! The Project Rhino XL owners can add 990 ah to the house battery when they are not using a generator or camper plug. There are also roof racks that come with LED lightbars that you can choose to use. The 2024 Krug Expedition Project Rhino XL has powerful overlanding rigs that can be bought now for as little as $485,000.
